The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Readings

Today, we conclude the liturgical year.  We begin our liturgical journey in Advent, awaiting the birth of the Lord, through His birth, public ministry, passion, death, and resurrection, and His ascension into heaven.  The liturgical year gives witness to all that God revealed to us through His Son.

Living in a republic, we may have difficulty associating with the term “King”.  But if we review modern European history, we find that kings and queens were prevalent as the ones chosen to lead the people.  The difference between earthly kings and Christ the King, is that earthy king’s rule over the people in a material world and their power comes from God, which they may or may not recognize.  Christ the King is the anointed of God the Father and His authority is not granted but existent from the very creation of the world and for all eternity.  And we believe that Christ will return one day, not as a child, but in His full glory and that day will be the completion of the mission of salvation when Jesus takes everyone who believes to Himself.

We do not have a King who flaunts His power and majesty, as earthy kings do.  Instead, He humbled Himself and took on our human form to be like us so we could share in His divinity.  The image of our king is presented in the Gospel as Jesus is presented to Pilate.  Pilate determines that Jesus should suffer crucifixion after being pressured by the Jews.  Our king suffering scourging, beatings, and dying on the cross.

An earthy king prides himself on earthy possessions and the strength of his armies.  Christ our King has no need of earthy possessions but only seeks to dwell in the hearts of His people and lead them to eternal life.  Our God chooses to love, and He is love.  We are reminded that we have nothing to fear because we had nothing before Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection and through His sacrifice, He gave us all of Himself.

May our hearts and minds and voices raise up today and give honor and glory to our Lord and be ready to welcome Him when He comes in glory.

May God continue to bless us
